The tournament went with chalk from start to finish. Despite some inspired play from Tucson SG Chad Ginn (27 & 42), this tournament was really about the play of Long Beach's PF Francis Boyd (35/5, 31/5, 26/8) and Olympia's PF Jesse Ackerman (26/9, 23/7, 28/5). Boyd was MVP for the tourney, but Ackerman was cutting down the nets as Olympia looked after the ball (5-17 turnovers) and executed their offense to perfection (FG:34/70 3FG:9/18) in the final.

Season 68 - Blow Outs Everywhere

  Quarterfinals Semifinals Championship

  1  Salt Lake City 83
8  Eugene 53
  1  Salt Lake City 78
  5  Roswell 57
4  Olympia 71
  5  Roswell 84
    1  Salt Lake City 56
  2  Tucson 77
  2  Tucson 112
7  Salem 57
  2  Tucson 107
  3  Long Beach 70
3  Long Beach 104
  6  Roswell 66

Roswell over Olympia was the only surprise in the opening round as the top 3 seeds all blew out their opponents by 30, 55 and 38 respectively. SLC comfortably accounted for Roswell and Tucson demolished Long Beach with McLain (30p/7r) vs Boyd (27p 4r) the premier matchup at PF. In the final Salt Lake City's offense never really got going as they shot just 20 of 53 from the floor. SF Lionel Baldwin led them with 18 points, but it was Tucson's Olin McLain who dominated the game with 25 points, and he was well supported by SG Chad Ginn (15) and SF Leon Ritchie(12). Senior PF McLain finished the tourney with 79 points (FG:31/47) and 19 rebounds. Roswell's 13 point upset of Olympia was the closest game in the championship bracket, with every other game being decided by 21 or more points.

Season 67 - Best Tourney Ever?

  Quarterfinals Semifinals Championship

  1  Long Beach 96
8  Eugene 57
  1  Long Beach 112
  4  Olympia 101
4  Olympia 97
  5  Carson City 71
    1  Long Beach 71
  2  Salt Lake City 73
  2  Salt Lake City 82
7  Carson City 45
2  Salt Lake City 80 (OT)
  3  Tucson 77
3  Tucson 64
  6  Roswell 63

After Roswell almost bounced Tucson in the first round the tourney really kicked into high gear in the second. Michael Sylvestre dropped 43 points on Olympia on 16 of 23 shooting (he'd finish the tourney with 80 points) in their run-and-gun, 213 point battle. In the other side Salt Lake City and Tucson went to OT where SLC's spread of scorers eventually overcame Tucson's Ginn/McLain tandem. The final didn't disappoint either with only a bucket separating the two teams.

The senior backcourt pairing of Edick and Salazar, along with rising PF McLain prove too much. Salazar tallies 72 points for the tourney.

Salt Lake City vs Olympia was epic in the semi final, but the Mormon then ran into Tucson who repeat on the backs of Montez Edick and Raymond Salazar. Edick in particular was sensational all tourney totalling 55p 14a to 3to.

Tucson finally put an end to Salt Lake City's reign of dominance over the conference tourney. SLC simply ran out of legs after OT games in both of the first two rounds.

  5  Salem 43
    1  Olympia 74
  2  Salt Lake City 75
  2  Salt Lake City 82
7  Carson City 68
2  Salt Lake City 81 (OT)
  3  Tucson 80
3  Tucson 83
  6  Eugene 58

Both the semi-finals and the final were thrillers, but once again it was Salt Lake City winning by committee. Butch Hurd stepping up off the bench with 17p (FG:8/11) and 6 rebounds in 19 minutes. Heartbreak for Olympia who lose 2 finals by a combined 3 points in the past two seasons.

7  Roswell 69
  2  Salt Lake City 100
  6  Salem 72
3  Tucson 72
  6  Salem 82

Long Beach had dominated the conference with 11 IC wins in a row heading into the final. Their scoring trio of McNutt, Eisen and Parish, fed by Bomhoff looked unstoppable until they ran into the Stormin' Mormon who had 7 scorers in double-digits in the final to make it back-to-back tourneys for SLC.
