Salem's trio of PG Robert Virgil, SG Jerry Okeefe and C Joe Blais, locked down Tucson and Salt Lake City, but they were no match for a senior Frank McAllister who had 94p 10a 3s to just 1 turnover across the conference tourney. He scored 36 points in the final on 15 of 22 shooting. Just one of many stellar performances in a senior season that was ultimately rewarded with being named the League Player of the Year. Olympia romped through the tournament winning by 33, 15 and 18 points.

Frank McAllister scores 106 points for the tournament. He shoots an incredible 39 of 65 from the field, including 12 of 21 from deep and 16 of 18 from the free throw line. His heroics including 43 points and 4 assists in the final weren't quite enough however. Long Beach's PF Gavin Wanganeen (76p 35r) and SF Kit Valentine (72p) both had 21+ points in each game of the tournament and eventually prevailled in another high scoring OT affair between these divisional rivals.

Olympia's starters were simply dominant from start to finish. 4 of their 5 starters scored in double digits in every game. The last still had 40 points for the tournament. That balance was simply too much. The other big story from the tournament was the early upsets in the other half of the bracket as Salem and Carson City knocked off Salt Lake City and Long Beach respectively to set up a 6 plays 8 semi-final. Salem's last 2 trips to the tourney's semi final round came in seasons 61 and 50. It was Salem's first Conference Tourney Final Appearance since season 41.

Gavin Wanganeen was a wrecking ball for Long Beach throughout the tourney, and had 28/9 in the final, but it wasn't enough to beat a deep Salt Lake City team. The Stormin' Mormon used its bench to get to the final and had a great game form its starters in the championship game to take home the silverware.

The final was an instant classic. This game typifies the high scoring shootouts that these teams had become known for. Long Beach's SG's (Griffin/Tarnowski) combined for 40, PG Moriarty added 22, and C Wanganeen 17 more. But it wasn't quite enough as Olympia's starters scored 91 of their 101 points. Dollar, Davis and Ackerman each had 20, Wasserman added 19.
Season 70 - Long Beach Break Through

The first round played out as expected and as usual the 2nd round had a pair of great games. Olympia's team was loaded (Wasserman, Dollar, Ackerman, Walton) but lost a shootout to the Frakkin' Cylons. SLC's balanced team was overcome by 28 points from Tucson SG Chad Ginn. In the final it was all Long Beach however. Their SF/C combo of Abi Gadissa (tourney average - 28p 5.7r) and Asani Rose (19p 7.7r) proved too much.

The tournament went with chalk from start to finish. Despite some inspired play from Tucson SG Chad Ginn (27 & 42), this tournament was really about the play of Long Beach's PF Francis Boyd (35/5, 31/5, 26/8) and Olympia's PF Jesse Ackerman (26/9, 23/7, 28/5). Boyd was MVP for the tourney, but Ackerman was cutting down the nets as Olympia looked after the ball (5-17 turnovers) and executed their offense to perfection (FG:34/70 3FG:9/18) in the final.

6 | Roswell | 66 |
Roswell over Olympia was the only surprise in the opening round as the top 3 seeds all blew out their opponents by 30, 55 and 38 respectively. SLC comfortably accounted for Roswell and Tucson demolished Long Beach with McLain (30p/7r) vs Boyd (27p 4r) the premier matchup at PF. In the final Salt Lake City's offense never really got going as they shot just 20 of 53 from the floor. SF Lionel Baldwin led them with 18 points, but it was Tucson's Olin McLain who dominated the game with 25 points, and he was well supported by SG Chad Ginn (15) and SF Leon Ritchie(12). Senior PF McLain finished the tourney with 79 points (FG:31/47) and 19 rebounds. Roswell's 13 point upset of Olympia was the closest game in the championship bracket, with every other game being decided by 21 or more points.

6 | Roswell | 63 |
After Roswell almost bounced Tucson in the first round the tourney really kicked into high gear in the second. Michael Sylvestre dropped 43 points on Olympia on 16 of 23 shooting (he'd finish the tourney with 80 points) in their run-and-gun, 213 point battle. In the other side Salt Lake City and Tucson went to OT where SLC's spread of scorers eventually overcame Tucson's Ginn/McLain tandem. The final didn't disappoint either with only a bucket separating the two teams.

Salt Lake City vs Olympia was epic in the semi final, but the Mormon then ran into Tucson who repeat on the backs of Montez Edick and Raymond Salazar. Edick in particular was sensational all tourney totalling 55p 14a to 3to.

Tucson finally put an end to Salt Lake City's reign of dominance over the conference tourney. SLC simply ran out of legs after OT games in both of the first two rounds.

Both the semi-finals and the final were thrillers, but once again it was Salt Lake City winning by committee. Butch Hurd stepping up off the bench with 17p (FG:8/11) and 6 rebounds in 19 minutes. Heartbreak for Olympia who lose 2 finals by a combined 3 points in the past two seasons.
