Shot Settings

Individual

There are a number of things you should be looking at in addition to the word ratings of the attributes.

Compare 2FG and 3FG efficiency

  • A player shooting 33% from three point range is as efficient (some would argue more efficient) as a player shooting 50% from two point range
  • A player shooting significantly better at 2FG's than 3FG's will be better off with a low 3P setting
  • A player shooting significantly better 3FG's than 2FG's will be better off with a high 3P setting (even if they aren't a great shooter)
  • A player shooting about the same efficiency from 2FG as 3FG should have a 5 rating for 3P.

Handling

  • A player with bad handling will need a higher shooting setting or he will make too many passes (leading to high turnovers)
  • A player with good handling may be better off with a lower shooting setting so that he sets up his team-mates more often (particularly if there are other good shooters on the team)

Athleticism

  • Athletic players tend to draw more fouls. (and you draw more fouls shooting 2's than 3's)
    • If they shoot a high FT% you might want to turn down the 3P setting a point or two
    • If they shoot a poor FT% you might even turn the 3P setting up slightly

Intelligence

  • Smarter players tend to make better decisions on whether to pass or shoot.
  • Setting them at the extremes of the shooting scales removes the decision making process from the player

You might want to put the smarter players closer to the middle of the shooting range

Tempo

  • On Fast Tempo the ball is shot earlier in the offense.
    • As your guards most often have the ball early in the offense you may need to turn down their shot setting to allow your scoring forwards to get enough shots.

Other considerations

  • Key rebounders (normally PF&C) should have slightly lower 3P settings as they need to be closer to the ring to maximise their rebounds.
  • Some players seem to shoot the ball more than you'd expect, and others less
    • After a few games with certain shot settings make sure that your team's shot distribution is how you would like it and tweak settings if required
    • ie are the players you want to be getting the most shots taking the most shots?

Team

The team 3P setting should be determined by looking at your team as a whole and determining the relative efficiency of 2FG's to 3FG's. If your team are better from deep, set the whole team to shoot more. Conversely if nobody has the range, set the whole team to shoot less.

Sometimes you will get a team or some players that seem to like shooting threes even when you tell them individually not to, you may have to turn the team setting down to get them to stop putting up so many.
